BOOK DESCRIPTION

In the field of orthopaedic rehabilitation, how many times have you said ''That's all we can do''? How many times have you heard, ''You'll have to live with it''? How often do you feel that something is missing, that there must be more? Well, there is more. Whether you are a trained manual therapist or a person considering manual therapy as a treatment option, The Princess and the Pea: A Holistic Approach to Orthopaedic Manual Therapy offers you a valuable new perspective. Author Gale Antaya, P.T. promotes her belief that the most effective orthopaedic rehabilitation program includes myriad options not commonly pursued in the past. Much of Antaya's thesis, grounded in both research and personal experience, is built on the concept of treating the whole body versus one isolated part. Her own ability to assess dysfunction, developed over many years, sets the groundwork for the straightforward treatment plan she shares with readers. Accessible, real-life case histories serve to illustrate the author's approach, as well as her success with it. This personal view of manual therapy makes its importance and appeal more apparent to readers of all backgrounds. Providing a viable, valuable option to the treatment of orthopaedic conditions, Antaya may well open some doors for therapists and patients alike.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Gale Antaya completed her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1989. As an orthopaedic physiotherapist, she has spent the past 20 years focusing on assessment and treatment of orthopaedic conditions including motor vehicle injuries, neck and back sprains and strains, post-surgical cases, TMJ dysfunction, headaches, sports injuries, and chronic pain states. Gale's interest lies in a holistic, hands-on approach to the assessment and treatment of orthopaedic conditions. Gale's post-graduate training has included a myriad of physical therapy-related courses from such outstanding therapists as Diane Lee, Earl Pettman, Jim Meadows, David Butler, Susan Massetii, Rex Lauren, and Lorimer Mosley. She began studying alternative approaches to assessment and treatment in 1993, when she began to feel that something was barring the way to optimal biomechanical recovery in many cases. Subsequent courses, through the world-renowned Upledger Institute, introduced her to craniosacral therapy, visceral release, myofascial release, and energy techniques. The integration of these techniques, into her conventional practice, has allowed Gale to assist her clients in achieving a higher level of biomechanical function and a greater quality of life. Gale is currently the owner of GA Physiotherapy Services in Grande Prairie, Alberta where she operates the GPRC Physiotherapy Clinic. Gale has provided local inservices in the areas of ergonomics, stretching, myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, postural evaluation, and chronic pain management. She is a member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and Upledger's International Association of Healthcare Providers. Gale is listed on The Canadian Spinal Manipulation Roster and is an Injury Management Consultant for the Alberta Motor Vehicle Association.
